Kristen Foxen, Jeanne David Elected to WiPHoF
On Monday, the Women in Poker Hall of Fame announced its 2024 class. Kristen Foxen and Jeanne David are the inductees, selected after a lengthy process that saw 52 women nominated.
The poker public, casting over 1,200 votes, helped select the inductees from eight finalists. Those votes, combined with the WiPHoF panel’s, ultimately selected Foxen and David.
Foxen’s induction was effectively a given. She is considered by many to be the GOAT among women poker players and it is hard to argue against that opinion.
She is second on the women’s all-time money list and holds five World Series of Poker bracelets, tops all-time for women. Four of those bracelets are open-field bracelets, also a record.
Foxen also has final tables on the World Poker Tour and European Poker Tour and holds multiple high roller titles.
Jeanne David is a lesser-known figure amongst casual poker fans, but her contributions to poker are legendary. She is the former head of responsible gambling for PokerStars and served as a Nevada state lobbyist, working with casinos to implement responsible gambling practices on online poker sites.
David was also active in promoting the regulation and legalization of online poker in the United States and Europe. She is partially credited for helping bring legal online poker to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Nevada.
Starla Brodie Becomes First Inductee of Pioneer Category
This year, the WiPHoF introduced the Pioneer category, recognizing the trailblazers of women’s poker who may be lesser known to the public or are no longer with us. The first posthumous Pioneer Induction goes to Starla Brodie.
For those unfamiliar with poker history, Brodie was the first woman to win an open-field WSOP bracelet, winning the 1979 Mixed Doubles Event with the late Doyle Brunson. She won the $1,000 Women’s 7-Card Stud Event in 1995 for her second bracelet.
Brodie’s career inspired many women, and she regularly encouraged women like WiPHoF and Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson to compete in the highest games.
The Women’s Stud event eventually morphed into the WSOP Women’s Championship. Brodie would run deep in the 1995 Women’s Championship, finishing 11th.
Brodie’s career inspired many women, and she regularly encouraged women like WiPHoF and Poker Hall of Famer Linda Johnson to compete in the highest games.
On a personal note, I have advocated for Brodie in the past based on her influence and what I have heard from other prominent women in poker. Her induction was well deserved.
Induction to Be Held at the Plaza in Las Vegas on December 11
The Class of 2024 will be officially inducted during the Women in Poker Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Luncheon on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at the Plaza Hotel and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.
The event will be sponsored by PokerStars, with Jan Fisher serving as Master of Ceremonies and Jennifer Tilly delivering the keynote address. Tickets are currently available on the WiPHoF website. If you want to attend, we urge you to hurry as tickets tend to sell out.
Kerryjane Craigie, PokerStars Ambassador for Women in Poker, spoke about the event in a press release from the WiPHoF, stating, “PokerStars is incredibly proud to support the Women in Poker Hall of Fame as part of our commitment to celebrating and empowering women in the poker community. The Hall of Fame’s dedication to recognizing the achievements of female players aligns closely with PokerStars’ mission to foster equality and inclusivity in poker. By sponsoring this initiative, we hope to honor those who have paved the way and inspire a new generation of women to feel welcomed, valued, and motivated to thrive at the tables. Together, we’re creating a space where diversity strengthens the game for everyone.”
After the luncheon, there will be an open-field $185 NL WiPHoF Celebration Bounty Tournament at the Resort Worlds Poker Room. There will be a $50 bounty on all players, and those who knock out a WiPHoF member will receive a gift basket.
